The Issue

Senate Bill 162, authored by California state Sen. Ben Allen, would prohibit legitimate cannabis businesses from using advertising or branded merchandise. The legislation unanimously passed the state Senate and will be headed for a full vote in the California State Assembly soon.

Why It's Important

1. Senate Bill 162 would limit industry growth in the state of California. The promotional products industry produces 60,682 jobs and over $3 billion in revenue for the state of California.
2. Senate Bill 162 would stifle potential job growth for the industry in California. A legal California market for cannabis is estimated to be worth more than $5 billion.
3. Senate Bill 162 would discourage competition. Our members would be denied access to additional revenue opportunities threatening the 5,330 businesses (97% small business) and overall California promotional products industry.
4. As one of the most effective forms of advertising, the promotional products industry should be permitted to service legal businesses including cannabis.
